He also said Alpha Sigma Phi national employees offered to work with the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life multiple times but weeks went by without a returned phone call. He said within 24 hours of being informed of the incident national members were in Ann Arbor to meet with chapter members and investigate. Gordy Heminger, president and chief executive officer of Alpha Sigma Phi, denied Blake Jones’s allegations of inaction from the national headquarters in an email to The Daily. However, their position differs from that of the fraternity’s national headquarters and the AAIFC, which say the chapter is in good standing but is no longer affiliated with the University or IFC. The University and IFC agreed on sanctions against the chapter and remain committed to their original decision to close the chapter for five years. Broekhuizen said the Fraternity & Sorority Life office supports Blake Jones’ statements.īlake Jones went on to say Alpha Sigma Phi had an “utter lack of consideration for the well-being” of new members and the evidence “confirms” the fraternity leadership’s knowledge of hazing-related behavior. It was this “40-yard dash” which prompted Blake Jones’s letter, in which she questioned the national headquarters’ response to the “heinous behavior” and shared that hazing was found to have taken place at the chapter over multiple decades. The case was closed because the AAPD were unable to verify the student was injured during the fraternity pledging process and because his parents were uncooperative with investigators. The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life received the messages in an envelope during the 2018 winter semester and turned over the documents to the Ann Arbor Police Department last March. “That doesn’t mean it’s a tradition or a (good) idea, but it means (it’s) become normalized by us.” “We had people run our backs during our hell week,” an Alpha Sigma Phi member wrote in a group message obtained through the FOIA request. Text messages and emails between members of Alpha Sigma Phi provided evidence of a “40-yard dash,” during which members would allegedly run on pledges’ backs during the chapter’s “Hell Week.” In the messages, the fraternity brothers wrote about the event taking place and a student being injured. 5, disclosing the reason behind the fraternity’s closure. The suspension from the IFC came before an MLive article published Dec. Alpha Sigma Phi’s intention to disaffiliate voluntarily did not absolve the chapter of accountability for its behavior.” “The University investigated complaints against Alpha Sigma Phi that occurred while the chapter was an active member of the Interfraternity Council. “The general practice of a minimum suspension for five years allows time for the current students to matriculate from U-M and for the headquarters to put greater support in place for the chapter to operate effectively following a closure for cause, to ensure that the same challenges do not recur,” Broekhuizen wrote. Broekhuizen said in an email that disaffiliation does not mean the chapter will not be held accountable. Kim Broekhuizen, associate director of the University’s Office of Public Affairs responded on behalf of Nicole Banks, interim director of Greek Life and assistant dean of students. “These sanctions result from a Hazing Response Team investigation that found substantial evidence of dangerous recurring practices within Alpha Sigma Phi’s new member process, including forced alcohol consumption and violent physical hazing,” the IFC wrote in the statement. According to the Office of Greek Life, fraternities must answer to the University regardless of governance. The fraternity cited new zoning codes implemented by City Council as the reason for the change. The IFC released a statement saying the Council supported the University’s decision following the Student Organization Advancement and Recognition review conducted by the Greek Activities Review Panel.Īlpha Sigma Phi disassociated from the University and Interfraternity Council in September, opting instead to join the newly formed Ann Arbor Interfraternity Council. 7, the University terminated the fraternity for hazing infractions with opportunity for recolonization after five calendar years. Blake Jones said “several generations” took part in hazing activities at the Theta chapter and the fraternity’s national headquarters turned a “blind eye” to hazing. Dean of Students Laura Blake Jones called out the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity at the University of Michigan in a letter regarding the University’s disciplinary action against Alpha Sigma Phi, which was later published by MLive through a Freedom of Information Act request on Dec.

I don't know how often I've fallen asleep reading a book and left my bedside lamp on. Just set your smart plug to turn it off for you. Don't worry about drifting away to dreamland before turning the blanket off. Wouldn't it be nice if your bed was cozy and warm before you got in it? Preheat your bed by plugging that comfy, cozy electric blanket into a smart plug and letting it heat up a few minutes before bedtime. Try this before cutting the internet connection out entirely, as doing so could interfere with other connected devices. If you want to limit internet access, most, if not all, routers have an app that lets you control internet access by device. While a smart plug is convenient for restarting your router, I don't recommend using it to turn your internet connection on or off. Note that if your router has a battery backup, this won't work, but if that's the case, neither would unplugging it - you'd still have to take the batteries out. Use your smart plug to cut power to your router for 30 seconds or so, then turn it back on, effectively restarting it. Or, your router may be easily accessible but on another floor when you need to restart it. Your router could also be tucked away in a closet, depending on where your internet connection enters the home. The top of a bookshelf is a good spot for your router, unless you need to reach it. Remotely restart your routerĮven the best Wi-Fi routers can give you some trouble when you need to access them. While a smart plug won't make it easier to plug something into the outlet, it'll give you control over the devices once you've managed to plug them in, such as a mounted fan in the attic or a fluorescent light in your garage. But some outlets, perhaps in the garage or attic, can be downright difficult to access. Outlets are generally located in convenient locations until you put a big piece of furniture in front of them. That way, even if someone has the remote to your garage door opener, they won't be able to raise the door. If a thief grabs that, they could also have access to your home.īy plugging your garage door opener into a smart plug, you can cut the power to it when you're away or in for the night. What's worse, many of us leave our garage door remotes somewhere in our vehicles. It won't enable you to open or close your garage door in place of the button, remote or control panel (like a smart garage door opener), but it will prevent others from opening the door.Ĭar break-ins are common. Plug your garage door opener into a smart plug. I came across this tip at Smart Geek Home, and it's too good not to share. You'll appreciate the convenience and the energy savings. Do the same with an indoor plug for the lights on your Christmas tree. Employ outdoor smart plugs to automatically turn on your Christmas lights - or your arsenal of inflatables, if that's your thing - in the evening, and then turn off at sunrise. Smart plugs can alleviate both holiday hassles. And next month's power bill? Even less so. But plugging and unplugging them? Not so much. Daniel Van Boom/CNETĪ good Christmas light display makes the season bright. Use outdoor smart plugs to automatically turn your lights on or off and save money on your electricity bill. Use a countdown or the trusty "abracadabra" to really sell it, then hit the button. Have the app for your smart plug ready, then proclaim your uncanny ability to turn the lights on or off at your command. We know how smart devices like plugs and lights work (mostly), but to a child, it's nothing short of magic. Going back to home security ideas, try setting your smart plug to turn on a lamp when your outdoor camera detects activity in the backyard, or automatically set a lamp to turn on at sunset and off at sunrise. You could also do the same with a space heater when the temperature drops. Now we're really talking about "smart." Many smart plugs are built with IFTTT capabilities, enabling you to pair them with other smart devices and automate how they interact.įor example, with a compatible smart plug and thermostat, you could automate a fan to turn on automatically if the temperature gets a little warm and then turn it back off when it's cooler. Feeding WPCS from BS has the advantage of being more efficient than feeding WPCS from RB and SB. A lack of scientific ensiling management usually results in poor chemical composition and excessive butyric acid contents ( Liu et al., 2019). Intake of livestock products with mycotoxins causes destructive effects on humans including altered genome expression and kidney diseases, diminished reproductive system activity, the intestinal tract disruption, and the development of cancer-causing cells in the body ( Luo et al., 2018).īunker silos (BS), round bales (RB) and silage bags (SB) are becoming common ways to store silage. Furthermore, there is a potential possibility that mycotoxins would accumulate in livestock products such as meat, milk, eggs, and blood products. It was also found that intake of mycotoxins destroys the structure and function of the animal intestinal tract, damages the immune and antioxidant systems, causes disorders of intestinal metabolism, and eventually impairs the health of ruminants ( Chen et al., 2022). Several studies have shown that ensiled forage, particularly the superficial silage in bunker silos (BS), usually accumulates mycotoxins such as aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), trichothecenes (T-2), fumonisin B1 (FB1), zearalenone (ZEN), deoxynivalenol (DON), and many other fungal secondary metabolites under aerobic exposure conditions ( Ogunade et al., 2018). (2015) reported that increases in temperature and pH could lead to silage decay significantly after silage was exposed to air. This contamination is worse during the aerobic exposure period than during other stages. However, silage can be contaminated with biological and chemical hazards from inherent mycotoxins and accidental fungi when there is a lack of standardized manufacturing and processing, storage or transport ( Ghilardelli et al., 2022). Silage plays an important role in the global agricultural and agri-food industries, ensuring a constantly nutritious supply for ruminants, especially whole-plant corn silage (WPCS), which is used in ruminant feeding as an important source of a high energy content and digestible fiber ( Khan et al., 2015 Gheller et al., 2021). To prevent the negative effects associated with livestock products, it is suggested that feed safety should be considered a prerequisite in developing a farm-to-fork food safety program for animal source foods ( FAO, 2019). However, these products are easily spoiled by many factors, such as zoonotic diseases, mycotoxins and undesired microorganisms. Livestock products such as meat, milk, and eggs represent a considerable source of animal protein for human food ( Cai et al., 2021). The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that there are approximately 600 million illnesses and 420,000 deaths worldwide caused by 31 foodborne hazards annually ( World Health Organization, 2015). Considering the feed value and food safety of silage in the feeding process, silage bags are recommended for WPCS according to the observed nutritional quality, fermentation index and mycotoxin content.įood safety has received increasing international attention in public regulation, private supply chain coordination, and international trade in recent years ( Unnevehr, 2015). Lactobacillus was positively correlated with Kazachstania and Candida abundances ( p < 0.01) but negatively correlated with Fusarium abundance ( p < 0.05). Acetobacter was positively correlated with pH, acetic acid content, and ammonia-N content ( p < 0.05). However, Lactobacillus still dominated the bacterial community in SB group. Acetobacter became the dominant bacteria in BS and RB groups after 5 days of exposure. The concentrations of aflatoxin B1, trichothecenes and fumonisin B1 were significantly lower in SB after 9 days of exposure ( p < 0.05). The SB group showed the longest aerobic stability (202 h) among all silages ( p < 0.05). SB group conserved higher lactic acid and dry matter contents and a lower pH value than other groups after 9 days of exposure ( p < 0.05). After 90 days of fermentation, silages were opened and sampled at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 days of exposure. The study assessed the effects of bunker silos (BS), round bales (RB), and silage bags (SB) on the nutritional characteristics, fermentation quality, aerobic stability, mycotoxin levels and microbial communities of whole-plant corn silage (WPCS). Silage can be contaminated with mycotoxins and accidental fungi after aerobic exposure. |
